Why Are Physical Exams Important?

Do we really need to see your pet once a year for their checkup? We highly recommend it at our veterinary clinic because it gives us a chance to:

  • Establish a baseline
  • Create an ongoing medical history that makes it easier for us to understand your pet’s condition
  • Spot subtle changes before clinical signs appear; early intervention can improve both quality of life and longevity

In short, to keep your pet at their healthiest, we need to know as much as possible about them and be in a position to detect problems before they become more serious.

Furthermore, pets, especially cats, are champions at hiding illness. You may not realize that your pet is ailing until you start noticing clinical signs, and by then, their condition can be difficult to treat.

Pets Need Parasite Protection, Too

Prevention is the backbone of cat and dog healthcare and wellness care; it makes it easier for your pet to stay healthy and enjoy a more carefree life. An area of preventative medicine that is especially important is parasite prevention. Heartworm disease, intestinal parasites, fleas, and ticks are major pests despite their tiny size, capable of causing frustrating infestations and potentially life-threatening illnesses in our companions. Along with testing your pet for parasites, they need to take parasite preventatives year-round to protect against bites and infestations.

Yearly Testing to Monitor Health and Screen for Disease

Our veterinary clinic recommends annual blood testing to screen dogs for heartworm disease, Lyme disease, and more, in addition to routine fecal and urinalysis tests. For young, healthy dogs and cats, we also suggest doing a yearly mini-blood panel. For senior pets, we recommend more comprehensive testing to assess organ function, blood cell count, and more.
